General view. Location: The Walk, at its junction with Sheffield Road (A61), Birdwell, Barnsley MBC, S70. Description: Large slim pyramidal column just off the A61. No obvious function. Inscription: On the front of the plinth, carved in the stone: Wentworth Castle / 3 Miles / 1775 Commission: Owned by the Wentworth Castle Estate. Comment: This was the first of a number of follies and monuments that marked the route taken by the 2nd Earl of Stafford across his estate to the doors of Wentworth Castle. Other monuments include the obelisk dedicated to Queen Anne, a column in memory of the Duke of Argyll and a number of buildings now destroyed during open-cast mining across the area.
