Description:
Plaque with deciation and funding details: 'This memorial was raised to / commemorate the vital work done by / over seven million women during / World War II'. Location: Whitehall - 100m north of The Cenotaph (LUTYENS, 1920). This cenotaph-shaped monument is hung with sculptures of the uniforms and clothing of the various occupations taken up by women during World War Two, both in the forces and serving on the home front in hospitals, emergency services and factories and on the land. The clothes are left hanging as the women left them to resume their peacetime occupations again. It was formerly unveiled by HM The Queen on 9 JUly, 2005. Former Speaker of the House, Baroness Boothroyd, gave the opening address and also personally raised £800,000 towards the sculpture from her appearance on the quiz programme: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in 2002. Her nominated charity was the Memorial to the Wommen of World War II Fund which raised the rest of the £1m required for the creation and installation of the piece.
