Description:
Exterior detail: West facade. Location: Oakerside Drive on Sunny Blunts Estate, south west of Peterlee Town Centre. Peterlee was a new town proposed in 1948. In the 1960's Victor PASMORE was engaged as an artist consultant working on design concepts for the town. The chief architect after 1950 was Grenfell BAINES. PASMORE worked on the Sunny Blunts Estate with the architects Peter DANIEL and Franc DIXON. As part of this work he designed the Apollo Pavilion which crosses a small lake. The area is surronded by grass slopes on which various housing types were constructed. The sculptural Pavilion suffered a lot of graffiti from the late 1970's and was neglected until the 21st century, with some calls for its demolition. In 2009 it was restored after financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Durham County Council. It was a Civic Trust Award winner in 2010. (See related information link for further details)
