Description:
General view with Jason THOMSON's bench in the centre background. Location: Children's Play area, Crookes Valley Park. Description: A metal fence, painted blue and decorated with images of animals cut out of sheet metal, surrounds a new playground and is intended to keep the area free of dogs. The sheet metal has been pierced in places allowing light to stream through and giving the animals the appearance of textured details, such as fur, and markings such as spots. There is also a gate, painted blue, with a very simple Arc and waves incorporated into the design and made wide enough to allow access for wheelchairs and double-buggies. Small, silhouetted, images of trees have been fixed to the top of some of the fence posts. This Playground contains a bench by Jason Thomson, working with local children Commission: Sheffield Children's Festival 1996. The animals were designed by local children and transformed into a design for the new fence by local artist David Mayne. Fundraising for the new playground was carried out by the Friend's of Crookes Valley Park who were successful in securing a grant from the Sports and Arts Foundation. Sheffield City Council's Recreation Department provided the labour.
