Description:
Front view. Description: A silver bird with flame like wings meeting above its head. The body of the bird is represented by two curling sweeps of steel, the head, tail and wings are more accurately formed. Commission: The design and a scale model for this piece were submitted as part of a college project for an art course. The council decided to use this design and the piece was made at a local steel works, where, coincidentally, Barry Hague's father worked. Press coverage of the time made much of this fact [1]. Comment: The Phoenix Works used to be on this site. By the time that the giant Templeborough Works were constructed the name of the parent company had changed, however the company magazine was still called The Phoenix Gazette. The concept of something being born from the fire was thought to be very appropriate for the redevelopment of the area. There is no plaque onsite with information on this piece. A painted mural also showing the birth of a Phoenix is to be found on the adjacent retaining wall of Bessemer Way. References: [1] E-mail from Michael Deehan, 8/2/2003.
