Description:
Photographed after resiting within Crystal Peaks overspill retail park. Location: Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, overflow carpark (coded yellow). [Update: 2004] The area has been re-developed and the piece given a new siting with two seats by Michael Johnson next to it. Description: The abstraction was inspired by the sight of a working steel furnace . Commission: Chesterfield Properties plc. Fabricated by Mayflower Engineering. Comment: Mike Lyons (1989). "It was intended that the sculpture should express the idea of strength and purity born from the fury and turmoil of the molten metal....Images of heat, reflection and lightning have been used. Mirroring the feeling generated in Crystal Peaks, the image is powerful, light and optimistic." The piece is not readily visible as it is situated in a carpark, not always in use except at peak periods, on the far side of the road from the shops and invisible from them. A plaque at the site states its origin: "To celebrate the achievement by Chesterfield Properties plc. in the creation of Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre. Presented to the people of Sheffield in 1990". The name 'Pinnacle' was chosen by public competition. Mike Lyons was also shortlisted for two other Sheffield commissions: the first at The Wicker and the second at the top of Fargate.
