Description:
Detail of one of the heads. Location: Rectory (or Presbytery), St Marie's RC Cathedral, Norfolk Street, S1. (AZ p.5 3F) Description: The figure of the Virgin stands in a niche with an ornate canopy, similar to that enclosing the Cairns statue on High Street [133] by Alfred Tory's father, Frank Tory senior. It is less than lifesize and stands at first floor level. Commission: St Marie's Cathedral. Comment: Alfred Tory (1881-?) was only in his early twenties when he made this piece and also, possiblly, all four small contemporary portrait heads which decorate the window at the eastern end of the rectory. The heads represent Canon Oswald Dolan, Pius X (later Saint), Bishop Gordon of Leeds, and Charles Hadfield - son of the Cathedral architect. The first three were respectively priest at St Marie's, Pope and Bishop in 1904. J.B.Himsworth's manuscript identifies at least one of these as the work of Alfred Tory. References: J.B.Himsworth: typed manuscript on The City of Sheffield Artcrafts Guild, c. 1954. Sheffield Hallam University library.
