Exterior view of a replica of the sculpture by GIAMBOLOGNA, located on top of the dome.

Location: Bradford & Bingley Offices, High Street, S1. Relocated from the entrance to the former Shambles, at roughly the same site, where it stood in a niche on the offices of the Electric Telegraph Company, the home of the Sheffield Independent and the Sheffield Morning Telegraph and The Star. (A-Z p5 3F)

Description: Nude figure of the 'winged messenger'. He is wearing a winged broad brimmed hat and carries a staff on his left arm, while the right hand points to the sky.

Commission: Originally commissioned by the Electric Telegraph Company.

Comment: A second figure, of ‘Vulcan’, also stood on the Electric Telegraph offices. Its present whereabouts are unknown. An identical casting of this piece is in Doncaster on top of the former York City and County Bank at the corner of Baxtergate and High Street.
The same statue is also used at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, as part of the Royal Corps of Signals Memorial.
