Detail.
Location: Wicket Way, (the former Yorkshire Main Colliery Entrance) New Edlington,
Description: Carved brick entrance feature. The wall to either side of the entrance to Wicket Way has been made from carved and fired bricks. The images thus created on either side are not identical but both show trees growing with their roots planted in the ground and the coal measures below ground level. These images gradually disappear as they become further from the Gateposts at the entrance to Wicket Way.
Inscription: On the left wall: EDLINGTON PARKS.
Commission: Funded by Yorkshire Metropolitan Properties; the total cost of the project came to £23,000 [1] Wicket Way gives access to an area now occupied by housing.
Comment: The trees grow with their roots reaching into the coal, which was itself formed from trees in the Carboniferous Period. They also hint at the regeneration of the site.
