Description:
|
Location: Wath Manvers, Wath-upon-Dearne, South Yorkshire. Google maps < https://goo.gl/maps/Vpfti > .
Description: Three blocks of sandstone, 390 cm high and cut or rounded at the corners, which intersect in the shape of a ‘ Y ‘. Inside the top of the head of the ‘ Y ‘ is an assemblage of painted pieces of machinery including wheels and a large bell. The concave side of the ‘ Y ‘ has separate steel plates down one edge, each with a letter cut out of them, spelling the word ‘ MANVERS ‘. Next to this are more cut pieces of steel in a series of vertical strips and circles. Commission: Funded by Yorkshire Forward and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The work was computer manipulated, sawn and welded. Artist's Statement: "Designed to symbolize the ending of one industrial era and the beginning of another. I have used a childs pop-up book as a vehicle to carry the story." References: AXIS website: Artist's CV [12/9/2003] |
