Description:

Drawing for the bench:
The bench has now completely rotted away. Photographed in 1990. Location: On the bank of a small stream, by the path not far from the main entrance carpark to Graves Park. (A-Z p111 6E) Description: The seat is made up of enfolding, petal shaped parts, based on the shape of the Buffalo Flower. Gaps in the wood have been infilled with concrete. Update [Feb 2001]: The bench now no longer exists. The wood has almost entirely rotted away. Only the right hand seat fragment remains visible. Commission: Sheffield Contemporary Arts Trust and Sheffield Recreation Department. Comment: Artist says the word 'poggy' is a word which she remembers from her childhood in Rotherham and refers to one's favourite spot. It is always a very private place. Wendy Marshall (1990) "I wanted the shape to have quite powerful proportions and yet have a gentle protective feel to it. To invite the onlooker to sit in its lap". Originally it looked very inviting. The seat had a highly polished surface because the artist wanted it to have a craft finish. |
