Description:
Exterior view: Headless Lion supporting a shield (no longer present - stolen). One of a number of works by Samuel SWIFT at this location. Location: On the side of "Lion Cottage" on Taylor Hill and in the retaining wall opposite, Cawthorne, Barnsley MBC. Description: On the house: Relief heads of a man and a woman and Lizard In the roadside wall: Two stone tablets depicting scenes taken from paintings: One shows a horse being fed by a man sitting on a barrel; behind them a second horse is held by a standing woman. The other depicts a man looking after two dogs: the inscription is indecipherable. In the sides of steps through the roadside wall: Two more stone tablets depicting scenes taken from paintings: One shows a soldier standing next to a gravestone with a badly worn inscription. The soldier is a corporal. The other depicts a king on horseback with a Maltese cross on his chest. Missing (stolen): Lion Finial / pinnacle. This was apparantly similar to that fitted on Cawthorne Church. Inscription: On tablet inserted into the retaining wall: "THE FEED. from the Painting by / J.F.HERRING SENr ESQ. F.R.A." Below the king on horseback: "GODFREY OF BOUILLON". This is a copy in relief of the equestrian statue of Godfrey of Bouillon in Place Royale, Brussels, by Louis-Eugène Simonis (1848) For comparison see < http://shimmer.shu.ac.uk/luna/servlet/s/69r6bw > . Comment: Samuel Swift carved the panels while he was still an apprentice. They are now housed in the retaining wall opposite Lion Cottage and are privately owned. Two are copies of paintings by J.F.Herring, an artist with local connections. SWIFT also carved the "alabaster reredos of Cawthorne Church, the statue of Paulinus over the North Porch door of the same church, and the statue of John Wesley, which is over the door of Cawthrne Methodist Church." [1] J.F.Herring himself was discovered by his patron, Rev Stanhope, whilst driving the mail coach from Doncaster.
