Description:
General view from the front. Description: The figure of an infantryman, with rifle held forward, is advancing over rocky ground. A pillar of rock at his back acts as support. The statue is sited on top of a pedestal in a small paved garden. Location: In a small raised garden at the intersection between Green Road and High Street. Inscription: On the front of the plinth: [List of names of WW1 dead] On the base of the plinth at the front: " TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF ALL THOSE MEN OF / DODWORTH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US IN / THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918 " On the left side of the plinth: [List of names of WW2 dead] On the base of same side of the plinth: " TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF / ALL THOSE MEN OF DODWORTH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US / IN THE WAR OF 1939-1945 " Commission: Planning for a war memorial began in 1920. In December of that year five designs for a memorial were considered at a public meeting, the successful design being by Tyas and Guest, sculptors and monumental masons from Swinton, near Rotherham. The cost, £500, was raised by public subscription. The monument was unveiled on May 13, 1923 by Col. J.G.E. Rideal D.S.O. T.D. In 1948 the names of the dead from World War Two were added and Col. Rideal was again present at the second unveiling.
