Description:
|
Exterior detail: Doric frieze with slotted triglyphs above columns at the entrance to the Director's Residence. Similar in design to the Temple of Hephaistos, Athens. Built to process salt on behalf of the French Monarchy who had a monopoly on its production and commerce. The semi-circular site includes the two largest buildings, where salt-processing was carried out, between them is the large Director's Residence. The semi-circular row of 5 buildings includes a blacksmith's workshop, a cooperage, and accommodation for different workmen and their families. The Entrance Pavilion also housed guards for the site. Two additional houses were used as offices. The saltworks closed in 1895 and the site is now a museum. Some of the buildings have been adapted to provide overnight holiday accommodation, and venues for meetings and catering. Location: Grande Rue, Arc-et-Senans. Google maps:
