Description:
Exterior view: memorial. Location: In front of the wall between the Cooper Memorial Garden, Church Street. Next to St Mary's Church and St Mary's Place. Description: A white stone cross with a carved rifle resting against it with its strap slung over the top of the cross. The cross stands on three white stone steps which are mounted on sandstone base. Inscription: "ERECTED / IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO FELL / AND AS AN APPRECIATION / OF THOSE WHO TOOK PART / IN THE GREAT WAR AND RETURNED / 1914 - 1918 / 1939 - 1945 / LEST WE FORGET / ERECTED BY MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL RESERVE CLUB" Commission: Erected by members of the National Reserve Club. Originally sited at the Headquarters of the National Reserve Club, which was on Harborough Hills Road on land which had been donated to the NRC by a Colonel Fox. The building was eventually taken over by the Yorkshire Traction Employees Club and subsequently replaced by a new building. The memorial was relocated on this site but suffered from vandalism. Re-sited to the Cooper Memorial Garden in 1991 when it was cleaned and missing letters from the inscription were replaced. [1] References: [1] Inventory of War Memorials #28002. Imperial War Museum
