Exterior view in the week before the opening of the London Olympic Games - prior to rehearsals for the Opening Ceremony. The Tower was built as a landmark and visitor attraction for the Olympic Park to remain after the conclusion of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Formed as a weaving and interlocking loop it provides viewing platforms overlooking the park. The winning bid in a competition run by the Mayor of London and with major sponsorship from the steel firm, ArcelorMittal.
