Description:
General view of site - a small island at one side of the Lake accessed via a footbridge. Location: On the high point of a small island just off the north-east shore of the lake. Access by foot from the junction of Gliwice Way and Lakeside Boulevard. A footbridge gives access to the island from the lakeside footpath. Description: Five silhouettes of flying birds, cut from stainless steel, and bent and welded together to form a group flying in opposite directions. Mounted on a square stainless steel plinth set on a circle of concrete around which is a bronze ring. This ring is decorated with wild life subjects that might appear at the lake; this include various birds, fish, a rowing boat, a canoe, a butterfly and bird footprints. Inscription: On the bronze ring around the base of the sculpture is a segment with the following inscription: BUILT ON THE SITE OF A FORMER AIRFIELD THE LAKE IS NOW HOME / TO A VARIETY OF WILDLIFE. YOU WILL OFTEN SEE THE FOLLOWING / BIRDS: MUTE SWAN, CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, TUFTED DUCK, / SHOVELER, MOORHEN, COOT & SAND MARTIN. ARTWORK ON THIS RING / WAS PROVIDED BY CHILDREN FROM LAKESIDE PRIMARY, ST PETER'S / ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL & HALL CROSS LOWER SCHOOL Commission: Doncaster Town Council. Part of the redevelopment of a large area south-east of Doncaster centre, formerly occupied by a civil airfield and RAF Doncaster during World War II. The airfield closed in 1992.
