Detail of the brick relief. Location: Longfields Road, Carlton - at the entrance to Wharncliffe Business Park - on the Royston and Carlton Boundary Walk. The pitwheel was originally (1978) In a field on the Royston Carlton Boundary Walk, near to Spring Lane, Carlton. Description: To the left - half a pitwheel, there is a plaque on the ground by the wheel. To the right a wall on whose surface is a relief in carved and fired brick showing two miners searching in the wrecked mine for survivors. The notice board at the rea contains excerpts from contemporary newspapers recording the disaster as well as other memoranda. Inscription: On a plaque by the wheel: Lest We Forget / In Memoriam / In affectionate memory of the following, all of whom lost their lives in the / Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Disaster, on Thursday, August 6th 1936 // [list of names ] // This plaque and new memorial site was unveiled and redicated on May 6th 2008 / by The Worshipful The Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Len Picken Commission: To commemorate a mining accident, 6th August 1936, in which 58 men were killed. [1] The original memorial was unveiled by Arthur Scargill, then President of the Yorkshire NUM, in the presence of Roy Mason, MP for Barnsley, and Cllr Dancer. [2] In 2007 the pitwheel was moved to a more public location and installed next to a brick relief carved by ex-miner Harry Malkin. Comment: .
