Description:
Detail: coat of arms on rear of pedestal. Location: At the north end of Wentworth Castle, Stainborough, Barnsley, S75 3ET. The original location was in the centre of Stainborough Castle, the folly built by the 1st Earl for his children at the highest point of his estate. The statue stood for many years under a canopy but this no longer exists in a useable form. Description: A Roman centurion in a large toga with his right elbow leaning on a broken column and holding a baton in his right hand. The figure is bare-headed with his left hand on hip. The whole stands on a pedestal with inscriptions on its front and side faces and a coat of arms on the rear face. The whole rests on a stepped base in a small garden at the end of the north wing of Wentworth Castle. Thomas, 1st Earl of Stafford (1672–1739), was responsible for a number of obelisks in the adjacent gardens and estate lands. Inscriptions: On coat of arms: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE On strap around shield: DIEU EST ... (illegible beneath this) Condition: Poor Surface - Severe corrosion on all surfaces. The inscriptions are very badly worn and illegible. Lichen growth on the front of the statue. Structural - Right wrist & hand and the end of the baton are missing. Commission: William, 2nd Earl of Stafford: the son of the subject. Comment: A rare full length work by the artist. The plinth and statue are in poor condition having stood outside for over two hundred years.
