Exterior detail: carving above the three doors at the West End. Figures and textwork were carved by Charles GURREY (2004) in limestone. The foundation stone was laid in 1936, but building was interrupted by the 2nd World War and recommenced in 1947. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1961 and the final parts of the building: Western Porches (the Garths), the Sacristy, the Lady Chapel, the Chapter House and The Tower were not completed till 1966. The non-standard bricks forming the buildings exterior were made near the site from clay dug out of the hill on which the cathedral stands.
