Description:
Exterior detail: part of the carved bench. Description: The Botanical Gardens, Sheffield. Description: The bench is composed of a twisting branch and a plank sawn from the same tree. The plank is supported in several places, by the branch which forms a back for the seat, and the bench is set on five metal poles sunk into the ground. Tiny woodland creatures have been carved into its surfaces. Inscription: Carved along the curved back of bench: "Now follow a dinosaur, steady and slow / To a tree that lived / millions of years ago". Commission: This piece is part of 'The Riddle Trail' consisting of eight newly commissioned artworks bearing riddles written by the poet Berlie Doherty and funded by Signposts, a Sheffield-based arts organisation. The project was commissioned by the Botanical Gardens Trust and initiated by Sheffield's 'Off the Shelf Festival of Writing and Reading' in 1999. Funding the Arts Council and the Regional Arts Lottery Programme. Comment: Made from a tree which formerly grew in the Gardens.
