Exterior detail: Noticeboard by the side of the monument located in front of a park on the edge of fortifications by the walls of the town. Text translated reads: ' This monument, the work of architect FOREST and sculptor GRANGE, symbolises the famous motto of Verdun 1916 - They Shall Not Pass. Five soldiers from different services, side by side, make a wall against which the enemy's attack will break. This monument is erected to the memory of the children of Verdun who died for France.' Location: Place Nation, Verdun. Erected as a symbol of French military determination at Verdun in 1916.
