Description:
Exterior view: rear of building with pre-existing buildings in use as office and artists studios. Stairs and lift are in the angled vertical containers in the left hand side of the building. Small courtyard leads to an arch with access to the river front. Walkways join the two halves of the building and 1st and 2nd floor levels. Location: Trinity Buoy Wharf, Docklands. Riverside Building has 5 floors, provides 22 studio and office spaces and is made from 73 containers. Erected in 8 days. The third of the major container buildings on this site. Trinity Buoy Wharf has a number of the original Dock buildings still standing. These include Experimental Lighthouse and Chain and Buoy Store (Archt: James DOUGLASS, 1864) used for training and trials. The wharf was occupied by Trinity House for the repair, maintenance and storage of their buoys and lightships. Closed in 1988, it re-opened in 1998 as a centre for the arts and creative industries. The Long Player project (Jem FINER, 2000-3000) is based within the Lighthouse and the University of East London has Fine Art and Dance studios here. Container City I (2001) & II (2002) were the previous container structures infiltrated onto the site between different existing buildings. Urban Space Management, who developed the site, have their offices in The Riverside Building.
