Description:
|
Exterior view: view of the original front facade. The white container is part of Container City II (2002) and contains a lift giving disabled access to all floors. The two structures are linked by bridges on each floor. Location: Trinity Buoy Wharf, Docklands. Container City I was originally 3 stories high comprising 12 work studios. Erected in 4 days. An extra floor was later added providing 3 'live/work' apartments. 80% of the build uses recycled material. Trinity Buoy Wharf has a number of the original Dock buildings still standing. These include Experimental Lighthouse and Chain and Buoy Store (Archt: James DOUGLASS, 1864) used for training and trials. The wharf was occupied by Trinity House for the repair, maintenance and storage of their buoys and lightships. Closed in 1988, it re-opened in 1998 as a centre for the arts and creative industries. The Long Player project (Jem FINER, 2000-3000) is based within the Lighthouse and the University of East London has Fine Art and Dance studios here. Container City I was the first of a number of container structures infiltrated onto the site between different existing buildings. Urban Space Management, who developed the site, have offices in another container building, The Riverside Building, elsewhere on the Wharf.
