Description:

Exterior detail: Advertisements showing interior designs pasted on the uncompleted apartment block on the edge of the site. One facade overlooks the River Tyne. Development by Taylor Wimpey. The bulk of the site is made up of clusters of houses. There is a shared social space overlooked by the back gardens of each cluster of houses. Use of different materials and textures. Service bins hidden by screens. Barbecue stands in most courtyards. Seating, planting, lawns and paths. Play areas and occasional children's play furniture are located throughout the site. Cars parked in designated spaces only throughout the estate. Built on reclaimed industrial land. The team included fashion designers Wayne & Geraldine HEMINGWAY. Car-parking is restricted, houses having designated parking spaces. Roads within the development are shared with pedestrians, bicycles and other forms of transport. Cycle use is encouraged and a shared cycle scheme is available for the development. The scheme won several awards including a Housing Design Award < http://www.hdawards.org/ > in 2005.
