Description:
|
Location: in Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park. Detail: south side railings. The railings were designed by G.G. SCOTT. Commissioned by Queen Victoria to commemorate her husband who died in 1861. The central seated statue of Prince Albert is by JH FOLEY, who also sculpted 'Asia', one of the 4 groups of figures at the corners of the site; the other sculptors were John BELL ('America'), Patrick MACDOWELL ('Europe'), and William THEED ('Africa'). The frieze around the base of the memorial is by H. H. ARMSTEAD and J.B. PHILIP. The 4 groups of figures above the frieze, at the corners of the monument, are by W. CALDER MARSHALL ('Agriculture'), J. LAWLOR ('Engineering'), T. THORNEYCROFT ('Commerce') and H. WEEKES ('Manufactures').
