Description:
Interior detail: Timbers in the ceiling of the kitchen, on the ground floor beneath the Great Hall. The main beam is supported by a stone corbel in the wall. The main tasks for 2010, when this photograph was taken, were to complete the roof of the Great Hall and the second floor with vaulting of the Great Tower. This project aims to build a castle using the techniques and materials used in the Middle Ages. " The materials needed for the construction of the castle - wood, stone, earth, sand and clay - are all to be found here, in this abandoned quarry. Before the gaze of thousands of visitors, all the trades associated with castle-building - quarrymen, stonemasons, woodcutters, carpenters, blacksmiths, tile makers, basket makers, rope makers, carters and their horses - are working together to complete the castle. " .. from the Guédelon website - see Related Information (below). Jacques MOULIN is the chief architect of France's Monuments Historiques. The project is financed by visitors, over 1/3 million of whom visit the castle every year between mid-March and the end of October. Visitor amenities and facilities are also constructed on site wherever possible. As the project develops different routes through the site allow maximum access to the work progressing. As essential feature of the project is the interaction with those working on it, visitors are encouraged to talk to people working onsite. In the adjoining forest an assortment of huts contain the other activities contributing to the project.
