Exterior detail: The hillside behind the palaces contains the Tomb of Artaxerxes II. [Photographed in 1971] Darius the Great (550–486 BC) begun the construction of buildings at this site, which lasted throughout the Achmaeninid Empire, until 330 BC when they were looted and burnt by Alexander the Great. World Heritage Site.
