Description:
Exterior view: Street view of four houses and one apartment block on Guildford Avenue. One of three different blocks in the development. The site was donated by Sheffield City Council which worked with The Environment Trust, whose mission statement promotes "... sustainable development by improving the social, economic and physical environment for community benefit", to develop the site. It consists of 47 housing units: 14 one-bed apartments, 18 two-bed apartments and 15 three-bed houses. They are 10 % larger than standard houses with higher ceilings and larger rooms. The buildings are timber framed and timber clad. Built using off site construction. Insulation uses recycled newspapers and argon filled double glazing. The buildings partially heated by solar panels, although there are some problems with the efficiency of this, and uses under floor heating . A slow mechanical extraction system draws air from the building at a slower rate, which creates a greater thermal efficiency. Water efficent taps, showers and cisterns are included and rainwater is collected using an urban drainage system to re-use water in the homes ior to allow it to soak back into the surrounding soil and into a dewpond. It was planned to introduce charging points foro electric cars, a car-share scheme and orchards in the rear gardens but these ideas were not carried out. The development won a Building for Life Award 2009. Further evaluation of the successful and less-successful elements of the project can be found at < http://www.buildingforlife.org/case-studies/norfolk-park/introduction > [last visited 19 July 2010].
