Photo-portrait of Adele Taylor by Ruby PORTER. Photographed in Taylor's studio as part of the documentation process for the Made in Metal Heaven Project. [See below for details and description of Adele Taylor's piece for this project]. 'Made in Metal Heaven' is a project in which 5 metalwork pieces were made and installed in Sheffield City Centre. 6 craftworkers produced ideas for each site. These sketches were used to select which artist would work on which site. The last piece was completed and installed at the beginning of 1998. Location: The bottom of Fargate at the entrance to Chapel Walk. They were removed during reburbishment of the lower end of Fargate and have not yet been replaced. (A-Z p5 3E) [Update 2005] In 2002 the planters were temporarily installed in nearby George Street during refurbishment as a traffic prevention measure! They have since been removed again. We have no information on further plans for these pieces. Description: Three planters - one large and two small. The sides of the pieces have concave faces decorated with etched copper somewhat resembling giant pumpkins. Commission: Sheffield City Council as part of the Metal Heaven Project. Funding for this project came from a variety of sources: the Crafts Council; the European Community; Sheffield Hallam University; Yorkshire and Humberside Arts; Arts and Museums, Leisures Services, Sheffield; Sheffield City Council and the Foundation for sport and the arts. The planters were manufactured at Mayflower Engineering in Sheffield. Comment: With both sets of planters it will be wise to wait until the plants in them have developed to see what the finished product will look like.
