Description:

Descending grilles increasing in size on the Charles Street facade of the building. Location: At street level of the Business and Technology Centre - Stoddart Building, Sheffield Hallam University, Arundel Way. Description: Pierced and bent circular shapes in a metal grille at just above street level allow light into the car park but also provide security. The grilles themselves somewhat resemble cheese graters. They are of differing sizes as the pavement rises up the sides of the building until it is nearly at the ceiling level of the car park under the building. Commission: Sheffield Hallam University as part of the Metal Heaven Project. Initiated by the City's Public Art Officer. The brief states: 'Design and supervise the fabrication of metalwork grilles for the open fenestration to the basement car park of the building. ..... grilles to provide security to the car park'. [1] 'Made in Metal Heaven' is a project in which 5 metalwork pieces were made and installed in Sheffield City Centre. 6 craftworkers produced ideas for each site. These sketches were used to select which artist would work on which site. The last piece was completed and installed at the beginning of 1998.
