Description:
Interior detail: The Penguin Pool. The pool is no longer thought a suitable place for keeping penguins, but as a listed building Grade 1 must remain in the zoo, although it is now unoccupied. A revolving fountain keeps the ramps wet. The flat paths coated in plastic rubber and steps are made of slate. The pool was listed in 1970 and restored in 1988. [photographed on September 23, 2009] The building in the distance is the Elephant House (Sir Hugh CASSON, 1962-5) - also no longer used for its original purpose.
