Description:
Present location: Winter Gardens. View of bench, flower beds and a section of LUND's Window grilles planted in one of the beds. Original Location: Windows on Norfolk Street entrance to Ruskin Gallery. Interior staircase railing and balustrade also by Lund. Description: Twisted, hammered and stretched metal rods of varying length and breadth. Other pieces in the project were carved/gilded letters on slate by David Kindersley and Lida Lopes Carozo (now in the Millennium Galleries) and sandblasted glass panels (interior and exterior) by Martin Donlin (one panel of which is now outside new Council Offices at the corner of Charles Lane and Norfolk Street. Commission: Sheffield City Council, grant-aided by the Craft Council. The fact that craftspeople were directly involved with the construction, decoration and display of the collection at the Ruskin, was felt to be compatible with John Ruskin's stress on the importance of craftsmanship. As part of Sheffield's 'Heart of the City' Millennium regeneration project the Ruskin Gallery was moved and rehoused within the new Millennium Gallery in the city centre, wherre it occupies a single gallery space. This Collection is made up of paintings, watercolours and drawings, minerals, plaster casts and architectural details, illuminated manuscripts and books. These were collected, and in some cases commissioned, by John Ruskin, the Victorian artist and critic, and given by him to the people of Sheffield in 1875. It is now held in trust by the Guild of St George. Comment: The individual window rods are an imaginative solution to the security requirements for the gallery. They also serve to attract attention to the nature of the building.
