Description:
Detail from the mural showing a double bass player. Location: On the rear wall of 171-175 Upper Hanover Street. Description: Underneath a banner declaring 'Genesis. Arts for all.', a group of people are dancing and playing music. The 40 ft high by 60 ft wide painting was designed to show the future use of the Genesis Arts Centre by all - bulging at the seams. Commission: The work was a gift to Genesis by the artist. Paint was supplied by the Dulux Community Scheme. Scaffolding was paid for by the then owners of the building - O'Keefe, Scanlon and Fry. Comment: The Genesis Project , an arts centre for people with special needs, began at the time of the mural's inception. The work received coverage in the local press and was received with enthusiasm by local people. 'The Star' mentioned that Paul Wood had previously painted a mural in a corridor at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. The top left hand corner of the mural has been damaged by water from broken guttering. Acknowledgements: Many thanks to those at the Genesis Arts Centre who contributed to this information.
