Description:
Exterior detail: view of a section of the reliefs on the right hand frieze on Sheffield Town Hall. Description: Frieze running either side of the main entrance to the Town Hall. Each half is the same length as the frieze on the Parthenon. On the right hand side a female figure carries a cornucopia (the horn of plenty) the reward of labour. Smiths, hammermen, grinders, smelters and miners are also depicted at work. On the left hand side another female figure carries a flaming torch (symbolising light and knowledge). In attendance are architects, sculptors, painters and workers in precious metals, also female workers in electroplating, buffing and finishing. The group of figures next to these represent ivory turners and knife-hafters. Commission: Sheffield Town Council. F.W.Pomeroy was awarded the commission to carry out and supervise the carving for the building. Comment: F.W.Pomeroy was the sculptor for a number of monuments in London and also the 4 upstream figures on Vauxhall Bridge (1907).
