Description:
|
View with the ice stadium in the background. Location: Outside the Ice Centre at the corner of Attercliffe Common and Coleridge Road, Sheffield, S9. (A-Z p.88 4C) Description: A stainless steel blade set vertically on a circular base of the same metal. The blade is gently curved and marked like the surface of an ice rink. The 'cuts' are actually in relief, making them visible especially when lights in the steel base illuminate the blade. The blade is set against a plain support of stainless steel. Bolted onto a concrete base, the piece is situated in a triangular garden area between a walkway and a wall bordering a car park. Commission: Sheffield Venues. The artist won a competition to design this piece. Mostly funded by Sport England through Sports Lottery funding. Designed and built February to May 2003. Fabricated with Mayflower Engineering of Sheffield. Unveiled May 21, 2003. Comment: The artist says that Sheffield knives and ice skating blades were the inspiration for the piece.
