Description:
Detail: sheep and top of column. Location: on Sunny Bar near the Market Place Description: "It is supposed to mark the site of one of the entrances into the town in the old, and no longer marked, town ditch. The sheep and pig are used to represent the links between the sale of animals and Doncaster market. There is a photograph of sheep being driven through Doncaster's streets to the market. I'm not sure if the original plan was for a moving arch shaped structure on either side of the road to be included (to represent the weighing process of the market) but I think these were dropped as being too dangerous." [1] A weigh-beam, which along with the animals will symbolise the town's market traditions, has already been installed to link the two columns which stand on either side of the road. [2] Commission: Part of Phase 5 of the Quality Streets Scheme. Funded by £70,000 of European money. [2] Comment: Due for completion September 2003.
